In a recent study performed in the University of California and published in 19/3/2015, it showed that the scientists succeeded in developing a new acne treatment pathway which targets the acne accurately and treats it completely, and this treatment pathway depends on new techniques such as nanotechnology, drug delivery, and laser light.

The study’s author Samir Mitragotri illustrate that the acne pimples and spots are formed when the skin pores blocked by the excess secretion of sebum or due to the mix between sebum and dirt or skin debris and many other reasons.

note 1: sebum is an oily substance which secreted naturally through sebaceous glands, and these glands are too close to the follicles, the sebum is useful in the lubrication and the protection of skin cells.

Mitragotri said that the new therapy for acne and acne spots depends on using ultrasound with a low frequency which forced the nanogold particles to go transdermal through the follicles and delivered to sebaceous glands

He adds that the gold nanoshells have a unique property called (Surface plasmon resonance) or SPR which allow these particles to highly convert the light rays into heat, and although gold nanoshells are very tiny when compared with the width and the volume of the human hair, but these tiny particles are considered the base and the key to this study.

When the gold nanoshells delivered deposited on the surface of the targeted area; the scientists aimed the laser light to them, thus the gold nanoshells absorbed the light and converted it into heat, and this heat deactivates the sebaceous glands, so there’s no excess secretion of sebum,  and at the end these nanoshells are secreted from the body without any bad side effects.

Mitragotri finally said that blocking the sebum overproduction source (sebaceous glands), mostly considered the basic way to treat acne and acne spots.
