Scientists Reverse Memory Loss through electrical pulses delivered to brain

Reverse Memory Loss is an issue of interest, especially for the elders and the patients who suffer from Alzheimer, so, in research which published on 8 March 2019 in the journal of Nature Neuroscience the scientists at Boston University succeeded in developing a non-invasive technique that has the ability to reverse memory loss especially the age-related memory loss.

The working and healthy memory is described as the brain ability to store information for a few seconds, and this ability declines with age and this memory disorder is the main component of cognitive disrupts in aging.

Reverse Memory Loss with Electrical Pulses

The scientists performed their experiments depending on two groups of participants, the first group consists of young people (20 – 29) years old, and the other group consists of older people (60 – 76) years old.

All the participants underwent a working memory task and their brain activity was recorded by using electroencephalography. And of course, the younger participants performed the task better than the older participants.

After that, the older group participants received through their scalps a non-invasive electrical brain stimulation for 25 minutes, then they underwent the working memory task again, and for a surprise, the scientists found that the older group start to perform well like the younger group, and this effect continued for more than 50 minutes.

besides that, there is a highly improved in the previous worst performers of elders.

Conclusion

In spite of the amazing findings of this research, but other scientists think that there is no evidence for the persisting of the brain stimulation effect beyond the session of the experiment.

But, although this stimulation effect is temporary, the researchers were very optimistic about these results, and they said that it may be a promising way to determine the full-time effect of this brain stimulation, and the ability to transfer it to other memory functions such as switching, capacity, ..decision-making, language comprehension, ..etc.
